Sydney draw in Perth, Jets win drops Phoenix to 5thPERTH - Sunday, 10 January 2009A tightly fought goal-less draw in Perth today, emphasised just how good the Sydney FC defence is, as they continue their run at the top of the A-League, even without the injured Socceroo Alex Brosque, and the season is shaping up under their current Czech coach, who only last week announced that he had re-committed his future for another season. Although home side Perth Glory dominated the statistics, especially the corners count, it was Sydney who were unlucky not to have taken all points, as they were unlucky as Michael Bridge just failed to get a touch in front of goal to convert a John Aloisi cross as the Glory defence were left wide open. However, at the other end Jamie Harnwell kept the Sydney defence busy with his aerial ability in front of goal, and then just went wide with the goal also inviting, but veteran custodian Clint Bolton was also in top form. Meanwhile in Newcastle, the Jets under Branko Culina although suffering a hiccup a fortnight ago, regained their winning touch to claim all three points against Melbourne Victory, even although reduced to 10 men in the first half, found an equaliser, and then scored twice more against an ageing League champions defence. The 3-2 win keeps them three points in front of the Wellington Phoenix, who now face two of the toughest challenges ahead - with the visit of Robbie Fowler-led North Queensland Fury supported by All White Jeremy Brockie who scored his first goal of the current campaign, and who definitely wants to reclaim his place in the World Cup squad for South Africa next June. The Fury visit and that of another "home" game against Adelaide United in Christchurch will be crucial, as will the away visit to WA against Perth Glory, although the hot conditions will probably suit 'Dadi Cool', who led the 'Nix attack on Saturday with two great goals. A round 19 catch-up game is scheduled for Wednesday when Gold Coast United will be at home to Newcastle Jets. The following Tuesday will see a resurgent Adelaide United host Perth Glory.
